Every organisation faces moments when its future is at stake — moments where strategy, culture, and moral purpose must come together. At Missions that Matter, we work with leaders and teams to shape those moments into lasting transformation.

The examples below show how different organisations and leaders have discovered and practised their own missions — building trust, aligning community and shareholder value, and reimagining leadership for a new epoch.

Impellam PLC: Building Trust and Fulfilling Work

At the UK’s second-largest staffing business, we began with a stark truth: too much temporary work was unfulfilling, and trust across the industry was low. These were not just operational issues — they were moral ones, shaping the future of how people live and work.

Working with the Chief Executive and senior team, we crafted an original three-year vision and strategy to put trust and fulfilling work at the heart of the business. I coached key leaders to bring the strategy to life, led the strategic review processes, and worked closely with the CEO to keep the mission fresh and relevant as the company evolved.

As the mission deepened, the organisation sharpened its culture as a craft-based staffing business and launched its first leadership development programme for fifty senior executives — building a leadership community ready to transform the sector.

“Matt helped us uncover what really drove us as leaders — and turn that into a distinctive, industry-transforming mission, strategy, and culture.”

Jill Thornton, Director of Global Talent, Impellam PLC

““We would not be the organisation we are without the work Matt has done over many years.”

SSE Distribution Major Projects: Aligning Community and Shareholder Value

In energy distribution, shareholder value and community value are often seen as opposites. At SSE, the challenge was to show how they could reinforce one another.
Working with VISION Consulting over two years, I led a team to transform the performance and culture of SSE’s Distribution Major Projects business. In the run-up to a major regulatory price control review, we envisioned, piloted, and embedded a new investment management approach to strengthen both capacity and investment efficiency in the network.
The heart of the work lay in helping deeply experienced engineers reimagine their role — not just as technical experts, but as stewards of community value. By connecting their craft to the health and resilience of the electricity system, the team unlocked new ways of investing capital wisely and delivering projects reliably.

“Keeping things simple is the hallmark of Matt’s ability. His clear and simple approach helped distil opportunities, drive sustainable savings, and create visible culture change.”

Chandra Trikha, Director of Performance, SSE

"Matt’s calm, supportive style enabled me and my team to shift to a new way of working while still delivering on commitments. His coaching made a significant difference at a stressful time."

Alongside large organisational change, much of my work is in coaching and leadership development. Here’s what clients and colleagues say:

  • “Matt is a brilliant thinker and coach.”
  • “Matt has a truly moral imagination. He is not moralistic. He understands well that our moral norms are constantly changing. But more importantly, he understands that engagement in changing what people find good and bad is key to leading a good life.”
  • “Matt brings enormous commitment, intelligence, and warmth of heart to whatever he does.”
  • “Matt ties all executive decision making and leadership to mission.”
  • “He helps the people he coaches discover their missions and make their organisations into their masterpieces.”
  • “Matt brings clients through extremely difficult learning experiences better than any other consultant I’ve seen.”

Across industries, scales, and contexts, the common thread is this: helping leaders and organisations discover and live their missions — in ways that are morally admirable, commercially successful, and deeply human.
